1855

David Connor initially built the Bunyip Pub on the west side of the Bunyip River, not where the pub stands today David, with his wife Honora and their children, ran the pub that was then known as the ‘Old Buneep Inn’The hotel had 14 rooms and a 25-stall stable the pub’s location changed when the main coach road between Melbourne and Sale was re-routed

1867

Conner moved location and established the ‘New Bunyip Hotel’ Connor’s son, David Jnr took over the license of the ‘New Bunyip Hotel’ during the 1870's

1879 - 1883

publicans were noted as William and Sarah McKernanin 1883, following the death of her husband William, Sarah re-married Christian Hansen; they continued to run the hotel until 1887

1887

David & Eleanor Devaney were next in line of the early publicans...they ran the pub until their tragic deaths in 1909Eleanor was severely burnt when trying to move fire on a shovel from one room to another; a few live coals had fallen onto the floor, which caused her clothing to catch fire. She sustained substantial injuries. Unfortunately, on 22nd November 1909, she passed away. 2 days later, on 24th November 1909, David passed away, believed to be from the shock of losing his wife.

1912,

Thomas Stacey held the license of the earlier Railway Hotel, which was destroyed by fire in 1924Stacey rebuilt the ‘new’ Stacey’s Railway Hotel in October 1924. the hotel, which is what stands today, was the work of Joseph Berry, a local bricklayer at the time, who built several district hotels as well as St Joseph’s Catholic School at Iona

There have been a few other publicans since Thomas Stacey... Fastrack to 2017, and it was our turn to become the publicans of a piece of Bunyip's history... hope you enjoy a trip down memory lane of some of the changes the pub has had over the last 7 years
